Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful for the perfume industry, in a higher yield and a simple operation, from an unsaturated alcohol, with a reaction initiator, in the presence of an aromatic mercaptan which is readily available and inexpensive, as a catalyst, in an inert gas atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: An unsaturated alcohol expressed by formula I (R1 is H or lower alkyl; R2 is hydrocarbon group which may have at least one hetero-atom of O, S, N, etc. therein), e.g. geraniol.nerol(3,7-dimethyl-2,6-octadien-1-ol) is reacted, in the presence of an aromatic mercaptan as a catalyst, e.g. benzenethiol, in an amount of 0.5W100wt% especially in the range of 1W50wt%, based on the unsaturated alcohol as the raw material in an inert gas, by adding a reaction initiator, preferably at 50W150°C, to give a compound expressed by formula II.
