Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain cationic high-MW bead polymer having excellent water solubility, by polymerizing an aqueous solution of a water-soluble vinyl monomer by use of an oil-soluble high molecular compounds as a dispersion stabilizer and an azo compound salt as a polymerization initiator.
CONSTITUTION: A water-soluble bead polymer is produced without formation of lumps by employing, as a water-soluble monomer, (A) a compound represented by formula I, wherein R1 is H, a C1W8 alkyl or the like, R2 and R3 are each a C1W4 alkyl, n is 2W4 and X1- is an anion or (B) a mixture of a compound of formula I and a different water-soluble vinyl monomer copolymerizable therewith; preparing an aqueous solution containing the water-soluble vinyl monomer at a concentration of 20W90wt%; dispersing the aqueous solution with the aid of an oil-soluble high molecular substance as a dispersion stabilizer to form a W/O dispersion; and polymerizing the W/O dispersion by use of a water-soluble salt of an azo compound represented by formula II, as a radical polymerization initiator.
