Abstract

PURPOSE: To aviod the misdetection and then prevent a runway of a magnetic tape device, by giving a decision with not only the length but the density of storage to the bit pattern of an identification burst on the precribed track and near the magnetic tape initiation (BOT) marker.
CONSTITUTION: For start of the reading action, the head 11 on the 4th track reads the identification burst in e.g. the PE system, and the output is supplied to the peak detector 13 via the preamplifier 12. Thus the peak position is detected. The output signal is supplied to the pattern discriminating circuit 14, and the output is supplied to the timer circuit 15 along with the clock signal during the detection of the BOT marker and in correspondence to the detection of magentic inversion of the 4th track. On the other hand, the record density deciding circuit 16 decides the record density from the output signal of the detector 13, and then sends the signal to the record density deciding circuit 17 when the record density is at the prescribed level. Thus the recording mode is decided via the signal of the circuit 16. In such way, the misdetection is avoided to prevent the runaway of the magnetic tape device.
