Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare glycolic acid useful as a chemical detergent, etc. economically, in high yield, by reacting formaldehyde with carbon monoxide in a reaction solvent using a strongly acidic cation exchange resin as a catalyst, and hydrolyzing the reaction product.
CONSTITUTION: Pref. anhydrous formaldehyde such as paraformaldehyde is made to react with carbon monoxide in a reaction solvent such as acetic acid in the presence of a strongly acidic cation exchange resin pref. at 100W200°C under a pressure of ≥30kg/cm2G. The reaction product is hydrolyzed to afford glycolic acid in high yield. The above-mentioned strongly acidic cation exchange resin is e.g. a commercially available ion exchange resin having sulfone groups as exchange groups.
EFFECT: Glycolic acid can be separated easily from the reaction mixture, and the catalyst can be used repeatedly. The reaction may be carried out continuously, and the use of an acid-resistant reactor is not necessary.
