Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a simple structure offering reduced installation and running costs by installing the first catalytic layer having reaction and nonreaction sections and the second catalystic layer consisting of a reducing catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: A single ammonia or an ammonia-containing organic mixture gas is admitted through the gas inlet 1 and is preheated to the specified temperature in the heating section 2. The preheated gas is passed through the first catalytic layer 8 consisting of an oxidation catalyst 3 and a noncatalyst 4. The gas passed through the oxidation catalyst 3 causes its ammonia content to be reacted with oxygen in the gas and transformed into nitrogen oxides and steam, and an organic gas, if contained, is also oxidized into CO2 and steam. On the other hand, the gas passed through the noncatalyst 4 passes as it is. Next, the nitrogen oxides and ammonia in the passed gas are decomposed into nitrogen and steam by the action of the reducing catalyst in the second stage catalytic layer 5. The oxidation catalyst 3 and noncatalyst 4 are to be proportioned to obtain the optimal ratio suited to the purpose.
