Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a surface active agent having low irritation to the skin, e.g. a kitchen detergent, rinse such as shampoo, perfumery, cosmetics, etc., economically, in an industrial scale, in high efficiency, by reacting a tert-amine with hydrogen peroxide solution.
CONSTITUTION: The titled compound of formula II (R1 is 8W20C alkyl; R2 and R3 are methyl, ethyl or hydroxyethyl) is prepared by (1) mixing a tertiary amine of formula I such as dimethyloctylamine with 10W40wt%, based on the amine, of water, (2) heating the mixture under stirring, and (3) adding 6W15wt% hydrogen peroxide solution dropwise to the mixture maintained at 75W85°C thereby reacting hydrogen peroxide with the amine. The molar ratio of the hydrogen peroxide to the amine is at least 1.1W1. The gelation and foaming during the reaction can be suppressed, the reaction temperature can be controlled easily, and the productivity per unit volume of the reactor can be increased by this process.
