Abstract
PURPOSE: To reduce the amount of water and increase the yield of monoalkylene glycol in the preparation of an alkylene glycol from an alkylene oxide and water, by carrying out the reaction in a specific range of pH using a catalyst containing Mo or W.
CONSTITUTION: An alkylene oxide is reacted with water using a metal of Mo or W and/or its compound as a catalyst at pH 5W10. The metal of Mo or W as a catalyst has preferably a large surface area. When the catalyst is its compound, it is preferably an oxide, halide, phosphorus compound etc., and its amount is 0.1W 100wt% of the alkylene oxide. The pH of the reaction mixture is adjusted by addition of molybdic acid, an alkali metal hydroxide, etc.
EFFECT: The molar ratio of water to the alkylene oxide can be decreased to ca. 1W5.
USE: Raw material of polyesters, anti-freeze etc.
