Abstract

PURPOSE: To contrive the prevention of a blooming without narrowing an effective light receiving area by a method wherein a charge transfer elements array for vertical transfer is given two functions of transferring the charge and of sweeping out a overflowed electric charge.
CONSTITUTION: Lights incided in the photoelectric conversion elements array generate the electric charges in a substrate and make them be stored. The electric charges generated boyond the amount of the saturated charge are overflowed to the charge transfer elements 2 and induced to a drain region 23 through a selected gate region 24. After pulse are applied to the charge transfer elements array 2 and the electric charges are swept out, signal charges in the photoelectric conversion elements array 1 are fed to the charge transfer elements array 2. The signal charges are further transferred to a storage region 22 and read out in sequence from a read- out register 4.
