NEW MATERIAL:β-Lactams of formula I (R1 is H, hydroxyl-protecting group; R2 is H, nitrogen-protecting group; R3, R4 are H, carboxyl, protected carbonyl, acyl, mercapto, alkylthio, arylthio, alkylsulfinyl, arylsulfinyl, alkylsulfonyl, arylsulfonyl, cyano, nitro).
EXAMPLE: 1- (2',4'-Dimethoxybenzyl) -3- (1'-acetoxyethyl) -4,4-bisethoxycarbonyl- azetidine-2-one.
USE: Synthetic intermediate of tienamycin having antibacterial activity.
PREPARATION: A compound of formula II (X is halogen) is treated with a base such as diazabicyclo[5,4,0]-7-undecene in a solvent such as benzene at -78W 100°C for 1W24hr to give the compound of formula I.
