Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an ingot which is free from surface transverse cracking, corner cracking and internal cracking by keeping the solidified shell thickness of the ingot at below a fixed thickness in straightening the bend of the ingot. CONSTITUTION:In a curved type continuous casting, a low head continuous casting machine of a small radius of curvature is used and the ingot is straightened in an area where the solidified shell thickness is <=60mm.. By this method, crack formation threshold strains is kept at a high level, and the temp of the ingot corner parts is made in excess of about 900 deg.C outside the embrittlement temp. region. Hence, despite exertion of any deformation upon the ingot, stress relief takes place quickly and the formation of cracking is suppressed. By this straightening method, supplying of the high-temp. ingot after the casting directly to a rolling line is made possible.
