Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a minute pattern by forming a silicone resin film having a vertically orienting property and a mask layer of a photoresist in order on the whole surface of an electrode substrate after which the disclosed resin film is treated with plasma and rubbed to make the orienting property partially different. CONSTITUTION:A vertically orienting film of a thermosetting silicone resin such as polydimethyl polysiloxane is formed on the whole surface of an electrode substrate. A photoresist film withstanding plasma treatment is laid on the orienting film, exposed through a patterned original, and developed to form a mask layer. The disclosed orienting film is then treated with plasma to eliminate the vertically orienting property, and a horizontally orienting property is provided to the film by rubbing. After removing the resist film a substrate having vertically and horizontally orienting parts is obtd. This substrate is set opposite to other substrate having a horizontally orienting property so that the horizontal directions meet at right angles, and a liq. crystal is injected into the space between them to obtain a display device capable of giving various displays with a minute pattern.
