Abstract
PURPOSE:To measure the molten metal level in a mold for continuous casting with high accuracy by making use of the reflected waves of ultrasonic waves in the contact part of the inside wall of the mold with the surface of the molten metal in measuring said level. CONSTITUTION:A capsule 10 containing an ultrasonic wave transmitter-receiver 1 is installed diagonally above in the mold of a continuous casting device. A high-frequency signal of several kHz is transmitted by an oscillating circuit 11, and this is inputted to the ultrasonic wave transmitter-receiver 1, by which it is excited to transmit ultrasonic waves. This ultrasonic wave signal falls onto the point A of the surface of the inside wall 20 of the mold, and propagates downward in the surface of the inside circumferential wall 20, then part thereof is reflected by the contact point B with molten steel 40, and returns to the transmitter-receiver 1 via the point A, by which it is converted from sound to electricity; thereafter, this signal goes through a gate circuit 12, an amplifier circuit 13 and a comparator 14, then to a counter 15 by which clock pulses are counted. These pulses indicate the time since the ultrasonic waves are emitted, until they reflect at the point B and are detected as echo pulses. From the length of this time, the position of the molten metal level 40 in the mold is accurately detected.
