Abstract

PURPOSE: To previously change mercury, which is required of long time for converting the mercury into an insoluble substance, into a sulfide in a disposal process to change the mercury into the insoluble substance in the disposal of waste water containing at least mercury, particularly waste water in an urban garbage disposal plant.
CONSTITUTION: The pH level of waste water, which contains harmful ingredients comprising many kinds of heavy metals including at least mercury, arsenic, cyanic ions, organic phosphorus compounds and organic compounds combined with said heavy metals, is adjusted to 8 or more. An oxidizer, which is selected from a group of chlorine, hypochlorite, potassium permanganate and hydrogen peroxide and has at least a quantity necessary to dispose of the harmful ingredients, is added to the waste water. A ferrous salt, whose quantity is not less than the equivalent of the oxidizer portion which has not performed reaction, is added to the waste water to cause the first ferrous salt and a ferric salt to be present together. The pH level of the waste water is then adjusted to 7 or less. A sulfur ion source is added to the water. The pH level of the water is adjusted to 9W12. Insoluble compounds are sedimented. The sedimented substances are separated from the water.
