Abstract

PURPOSE: To readily produce the captioned roll having hardness differences in the axial direction by using the double centrifugal casting molds assembled by inserting one or a plurality of sleeves whose thicknesses are made different in their axial direction into an outside chiller.
CONSTITUTION: A sleeve 2 having a thick-walled part 2a and a thin-walled part 2b in the axial direction is inserted into an outside chiller 1 and sand molds 3, 3 for forming the neck parts of the roll are disposed to both ends of the sleeve 2. Here the use of two sleeves, a sleeve having the thick-walled part 2a and a sleeve having the thin-walled part 2b in place of the sleeve 2 is equally well. The inside diametral surface of the outside chiller 1 is beforehand formed with a large diameter part 1a and a small diameter part 1b. The outside chiller 1 is set on rotary rollers 4, 4 and is rotated, thence molten metal is poured through a feed spout 5 to form an outside shell layer, after which the inside shell layer molten metal is poured, whereby the composite roll integrated with both layers is produced.
