Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve the wettability of an inorg. reinforcing material for a matrix and maintain the high temp. strength of the material constant by coating the material surface with a specified semi-inorg. cpd.; thermally decomposing the cpd.; and combining the resulting material with the matrix.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of an inorg. reinforcing material such as glass, ceramics or metal fiber is coated with a semi-inorg. cpd. such as polycarbosiloxane convertible into ceramics based on amorphous, β-type or α-type SiC or mixed phase SiC by heating at 400W2000°C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. The coated material is heated to 400W2000°C to thermally decompose the cpd. The resulting material is then combined with a matrix such as metal, ceramics or plastics by a suitable method to manufacture a composite reinforcing material. It has high strength at room temp. and superior high temp. properties and is suitably used as a building material, a material for corrosion resistant apparatus, etc. in various uses.
