Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound as a raw material for a perfume, muscone, in higher yield and selectivity, by intramolecular cyclization of hexadecane-2,15- dione, with a specific organoaluminum compound and tertiary amine as a novel condensation agent.
CONSTITUTION: Hexadecane-2,15-dione of formula I is subjected intramolecular cyclization, in the presence of an inert solvent, by the combined use of an organoaluminum compound, e.g. diethyl-aluminum phenoxide, diethyl-aluminum chlorophenoxide, of formula III (R1 and R2 are alkyl; R3 is aryl, acyl, or alkanesulfonyl) and a tertiary amine, e.g. pyridine or picoline, as a highly active condensation agent, to obtain 3-methyl-2-cyclopentadecen-1-one of formula II.
