Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as a raw material for polyamides in high yield with a high reaction rate advantageously, without side reactions, by esterifying a cis-epoxysuccinic acid or its ester in the presence of an acid having a nucleophilic reagent constant ≤1.0 as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: cis-Epoxysuccinic acid or its ester is reacted with an alcohol in the presence of an acid, preferably perchloric or p-toluene sulfonic acid, having a nucleophilic reagent constant ≤1.0 as a catalyst to give a cis-epoxysuccinate in high yield and selectivity industrially advantageously with suppressed side reactions of addition to the oxirane ring and accelerated esterification.
USE: A raw material for polyamides, detergent builders, and crosslinkable high polymers.
