Abstract

PURPOSE: To be attainable of EGR operation near to the limits without giving ill influence to drivability in such a way that exhaust-to-air ratio is detected, which is feedback controlled, and excessive air is substituted by circulating exhaust.
CONSTITUTION: An EGR passage 18 is provided for returning part of exhaust in an exhaust pipe 16 to an air inlet passage 14 to introduce air into the engine main body 10, a control valve 20 is installed in free command of swiveling around a pipe 22 at one end of upper stream than the passage 18 in contraposition to the opening end to the air inlet passage 14. This control valve 20 makes change-overs of first, second electromagnetic valves 38a, 38b a negative 34 of an actuator 24 makes changeovers between atmosphere and negative pressure source 36, by which its opening degrees are regulated, and EGR ratio is controlled. When said control circuit 44 inputs output signal of an air-to-fuel ratio sensor 40, and for example with increase of load, excessive air is diminished, the electromagnetic valve 38a is changed over to be closed, and the electromagnetic valve 38b is changed over to be intermittently opened.
