Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce magnetic alloy powder of uniform alloy composition excelling in grain shape, by uniformly solid-solving a metal other than Fe, such as Co and Ni, in the inside of magnetic powder of iron oxide, and heating and reducing in a reducing gas.
CONSTITUTION: To γ-Fe2O3 powder, Fe3O4 powder, or intermediate powder thereof, a salt of said metal is added by the rate so that the content of metals other than Fe may be 0.5W50wt%, especially 1W20wt%. This mixture is heated in water medium by water heat reaction method or treated similarly to uniformly solid-solve the metals other than Fe, so that modified iron oxide magnetic powder may be obtained. Such metals other than Fe may be Co, Ni, Cr, Mn, etc. In the water heat reaction method, water insoluble metal salt, such as Co3O4when Co salt, is used. Said modified iron oxide magnetic powder is heated at reducing temperature of usually about 300W450°C, by using a reducing gas such as CO, and is reduced. The obtained magnetic alloy powder is used as high density magnetic recording medium, such as magnetic tape and magnetic disk.
