Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a cast iron powder of a low C content on the whole, by removing the free graphite separating off as fine powder, when crushing the chips occurring when cutting or grinding cast moldings.
CONSTITUTION: Said chips are charged 1 in a vibratory sieaving machine 2, and foreign matter mixed in the chips and powder of 8-mesh ir larger size are removed. The chips passing through the sieving machine 2 are transported by air into a crusher 4 of hammer mill type by means of a blower 3 to be crushed. The crushed powder is transported by air into an air force centrifugal sorter 5 by means of the blower 3 to be sorted into free graphite powder of small mass and powder of larger mass containing iron powder. The free graphite powder is sent into a capturing machine 6 together with conveying air, and is captured by a filter. The powder remaining in the sorter 5 is led into vibratory sieving machines 7, 8 in succession by gravity, and classed by the grain size. When a powder of 48W270 mesh, removing the classed powder of 270 mesh or less which is mostly free graphite, is mixed, the carbon content may be reduced from 3.55wt% of te material to a low 1.4wt%.
