Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce high quality products of a large size in a high yield by periodically changing the output of infrared rays in production of star ruby and star sapphire by concentrating infrared rays on a sintered raw material rod followed by crystallization.
CONSTITUTION: Infrared rays from halogen lamp 2 or a xenon lamp are concentrated on sintered rod 4 of corundum uniformly contg. titanium oxide with spheroidal mirror 1 to form melting zone 3, and rod 4 is slowly lowered to obtain crystal 5. The resulting crystal is further heat treated to form needlelike microcrystals. At this time, the infrared output of lamp 2 is periodically changed to raise the temp. of the central part, so the microcrystals are prevented from gathering on the central part. Thus, the microcrystals are almost uniformly distributed in the central part and the peripheral part, resulting in star ruby or star sapphire having a large diameter and a perfect star.
