Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent occurrence of stress corrosion cracking in an austenitic stainless steel pipe or the like by soln.-heat-treating the inside of the weld zone of the pipe by heating with laser beams to convert the welding residual stress from tensile stress to compressive stress. CONSTITUTION:Laser beams 2 emitted from laser source 1 are reflected by mirror 3 and allowed to arrive at the inside of steel pipe 6 to be treated. Water sprinkler 4 fitted with a mirror is set in the vicinity of the weld zone in pipe 6, and the beams are reflected by the mirror and applied to weld metal 7. The periphery of the weld zone heated to 700-1100 deg.C is then quenched with water sprayed, whereby it is soln.-heat- treated to convert the welding residual stress from tensile stress of 20- 30kg/mm<2> to compressive stress of 5-10kg/mm<2>, thus enhancing the stress corrosion cracking resistance of the pipe.
