Abstract

PURPOSE:To perform optimum modulation by providing an amplitude control circuit, etc., detecting third order higher harmonic components produced by a light modulator and so controlling the same as to become always a fixed level or under. CONSTITUTION:Part of the laser light modulated by a light modulator 12 is branched by a beam splitter 13 to control an amplitude control circuit 16 by way of a photoelectric transducer 17 or the like, whereby the amplitude of the modulating carrier signal being applied to the light modulator 12 is changed. When the amplitude of the carrier signal being applied to the light modulator 12 is small, the portions of the modulation characteristic curve 1 close to a straight line are used and therefore distortions are sufficiently small. When the amplitude of the carrier signal increases, the higher harmonic distortions increase abruptly. In this case, third order higher harmonics appear but the input carrier of the light modulator 12 is so controlled that the third order higher harmonics become always a fixed level or under. Hence, the optimum modulation by which the signal of good quality is obtained may be accomplished.
