Abstract
PURPOSE: Polyvinyl alcohol hollow fibers with uniformly porous structure are dipped in a solution containing a specific aliphatic polyhydric alcohol to lessen the swelling when changed from dry to wet state, thus increasing dimensional stability.
CONSTITUTION: Polyvinyl alcohol hollow fibers with uniformity of porous structure, in which the well thickness ranges from 50W500Å and pores of 0.02W2μ in average diameter distribute uniformly in the cross section, are immersed in a solution containing 10W100wt% of an aliphatic polyhydric alcohol of 2W4 carbon atoms so that the content of the alcohol is adjusted to 10W150wt%. Then, the fibers are heat treated to sufficient dryness. The alochol cited above is, e.g., glycerol, ethylene glycohol, etc., which is mixed with another solvent as water, ethanol or acetone to provide the treating solution.
