Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as an intermediate for the synthesis of 1-oxadethiacephalosporin compounds readily, by reacting safe and inexpensive chloramine-T and an acid of specific pH with a penicillin derivative.
CONSTITUTION: One mole of a penicillin derivative (P) of formula I: (R1 and R2 are alkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups) is reacted with 1W10 moles of a compound (c) of formula II: (R is lower alkyl group; n is an integer 0W3; M is alkali metal; X is halogen), e.g. chloramine-T, B, or X, and an acid, e.g. acetic, hydrochloric, or sulfuric acid, at a pH of 3W8, in an inert solvent, e.g. acetone, to give a compound of formula III. The compound (c) and the acid are added in portions alternately to maintain the pH at a specific value, which is necessary for preventing the decomposition of compound (p) and accelerating e reaction.
