Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a fluorocopolymer with excellent physical properties in high efficiency, by carrying out polymerization in an aqueous medium with a specific pH in the presence of a cpecific perfluorovinyl ether.
CONSTITUTION: To a mixture of a fluoromonomer such as tetrafluoroethylene, fluorovinylidene and a comonomer such as propylene, hexafluoropropylene, tetrafluoroehylene is added 0.1W10 mole%, based on the total monomer mixture, of a perfluorovinyl ether of formula (M is NH4 or alkali metal; N is 1W7), followed by carrying out polymerization in an aqueous medium of a pH of 5W10(pref. 6W9) virtually free from surfactant in the presence of 0.005W5wt% of an initiator. Said perfluorovinyl ether of the formula can be synthesized by bydrolysing an ester or acid fluoride of the corresponding fluorovinyl ether to form the corresponding acid, followed by neutralizing to obtain the salt.
