Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent an interfacial reaction between the base metal and metal oxide to prolong the life of cathode by putting carbon layer and noble metal layer between the base metal and metal oxide.
CONSTITUTION: The base metal 1 contains one or more of high melting point metals such as W, Mo, Re and Ta and 2 % or more by weight, one or more of reducing metals such as Zr, Al, Mg, Si, Ti, U and Cr, and nickel or nickel alloy such as Ni-W-Mg, Ni-W-Mo-Mg or Ni-W-Re-Mg. Carbon layer 2 with thickness 50 to 1000 Å is placed on the base metal, noble metal layer 3 such as Pt or Rh with thickness 100 to 10000 Å is put on the carbon layer. The uppermost surface is covered with electron radiating alkaline earth metal oxide 4 in an ordinary way to form the cathode.
