Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a prepreg curable at a relatively low temperature, having a long potlife, by impregnating carbon fibers with an epoxy resin composition comprising dicyandiamide and 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-N-dimethylurea.
CONSTITUTION: 100 parts by wt. of a resin mixture having a viscosity of 30W300 poises at 80°C comprising (a) 50 wt.% or more of a phenol-novolak epoxy resin and (b) a bisphenol A epoxy resin is incorporated with dicyandiamide having a crystal size ≤100μ and 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-N-dimethylurea. The resin composition is applied to a sheet of release paper, and carbon fibers are placed in parallel on the film. A sheet of release paper is placed and hot pressed by hot pressure rolls at a linear pressure of 0.1W100 kg/cm2 to impregnate the fibers with the resin and to open the fibers.
