Abstract

PURPOSE: The hydrolysis of hollow fibers of cellulose ester is effected in a medium containing an alkali metal salt of acid with a pKa of higher than a specific value, thus producing title hollow fibers suitably used for hemodialysis because they has substantially round cross section and uniform quality.
CONSTITUTION: Hollow fibers of cellulose ester are hydrolyzed at least partially in a medium such as an aqueous solution containing (A) an alkali metal salt of acid with a pH of 9 or more such as sodium carbonate and (B) sodium hydroxide, e.g., at 40°C. The medium preferably contains, in addition to component B, 5W50% of water-soluble salts of which at least 5% is occupied with component A.
EFFECT: The remarkable reduction in the pH of the reaction system is prevented by the neutralization of the acetic acid formed in the cource of the hydrolysis with component A added to enable the smooth and uniform hydrolysis.
