Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture chemically stable glass by heating a batch, to a high temp., prepared by adding carbon and silica sand to flue dust from a sodium sulfate-base glass melting furnace to vitrify the batch.
CONSTITUTION: A batch is prepared consisting of, by wt., flue dust from a sodium sulfate-base glass melting furnace about 55W60%, carbon about 5W10% and silica sand about 30W35%. By heating this batch at about 1,100°C or above in an oxidizing atmosphere chemically stable homogeneous glass can be manufactured. This glass is convenient for storage and discard or recycling, and harmful trace metal contained in the dust is not eluted at all.
