Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare efficiently a basic polymer useful for ion exchangers, etc. and having a specific amount of basic nitrogen atoms at the side chains, by reacting a specific amine with a linear polydivinylbenzene in the presence of the corresponding alkali metal amide.
CONSTITUTION: (A) An amine I (R1 and R2 are H, 1W20C hydrocarbon or 1W16C aminoalkyl) is reacted with (B) a linear polydivinylbenzene III in a solvent, e.g. tetrahydrofuran etc., at 40°C in the presence of (C) the corresponding alkali metal amide II (M is alkali metal) to give a basic polymer composed of ≥5wt% of the recurring unit IV and ≤95wt% of the recurring unit V. The number average molecular weight of (B) is preferably 500W1,000,000.
