Abstract
PURPOSE: To prevent the occurrence of welding defects in irregular groove spacings and obtain homogeneous weld zone by moving an ultrasonic wave detector in the direction rectangular to the weld line, detecting the groove spacing right before the weld zone and increasing or decreasing the feed rate of welding wire according to the results of the detection thereof.
CONSTITUTION: A bearing part 4 and small motor 5 part are so installed ahead of a welding torch 12 by way of supporting arms 10 and a hinge 11 with spring that a moving body 7 moves in the direction rectangular to the weld line by crossing the welding groove 9a of the welding works 9. When the torch 12 advances, an ultrasonic sensor 1 advances ahead of the torch while reciprocatively moving in the direction rectangular to the welding groove 9a. The signal from the sensor 1 is amplified by an amplifier 14 and is then sent to an integrating circuit 15, thence the signal is compared with a set value 16a in a comparator 16. Next, said signal is sent to a control circuit 17 which in turn controls the number of revolutions of a welding wire feed motor 18, thereby increasing or decreasing the feed rate of the welding wire. Hence, the feed rate of the welding wire is increased or decreased according to the size of the groove spacing, whereby the homogeneous weld zone is obtained.
