Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:Para-[α,α,α',α'-tetrakis(glycidyloxyaryl)]1-xylene of formula I (R1,2 are H or methyl).
EXAMPLE: P-[α,α,α',α'-Tetrakis(glycidyloxyphenyl)]-xylene.
USE: A polyfunctional epoxy compound for epoxy resin. Gives a cured product having excellent physical properties when combined with other epoxy compound.
PROCESS: The compound of formula I is prepared by (1) subjecting terephthalaldehyde and a monohydric phenol compound to dehydration condensation reaction, and (2) reacting the producted tetra-hydric phenol compound of formula II with an epihalohydrin or a β-methyl-epihalohydrin in the presence of a quaternary ammonium salt or an alkali.
