Abstract

PURPOSE: Racemic pantholactone or its mixture containing a large amount of one optically active isomer is resolved by direct crystallization from an organic solvent in the presence of a specific stabilizer to give title compound useful as an intermediate of medicines by simple operations with industrial advantage.
CONSTITUTION: Racemic pantholactone or its isomeric mixture containing a large amount of one optically active isomer is dissolved in an organic solvent and at least one stabilizer is combined therewith, which is selected from the groups consisting of formamide, dimethylformamide, dimethylsulfoxide, dimethylsulfone, nitromethane, acetonitrile and phosphoric acid hexamethyltriamide. Further, seed crystals of the one isomer to be separated are added to the solution and then the optically active isomer is separated by direct crystallization with simple operation in high yield. The stabilizer is inexpensively available and shows remarkable effect in spite of the use in a small amount and permits the repitition use, thus being industrially advantageous.
