Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent generation of over filling and wrinkle flaw, and to efficiently elongate the ellipse type thick walled hollow pipe blank, and to make possible the manufacture of the seamless steel pipe of good quality, by constituting so as to perform the ellipse type press roll rolling pass, and then, to perform the forming work with the round caliber of the rolling mill. CONSTITUTION:The rolling mills 1a, 1b, facing each other, possessing the ellipse type calibers, and the rolling mills 11a, 11b, possessing the round calibers, are continuously installed respectively in horizontal and vertical positions; a square billet 4a is inserted into the mills 1a, 1b, and the common mandrel 12 is pierced in order to form the ellipse type thick walled hollow pipe blank 4b; and next, this pipe blank 4b is rolled by the mills 11a, 11b, and is elongated into the round hollow pipe blank. By performing the ellipse type press roll piercing, the generation of the over filling and wrinkle flaw can be prevented, and the elongation can be efficiently performed. As a result, the seamless steel pipe of good quality can be manufactured.
