Abstract

PURPOSE: To cause collision of intake-air flows positively in the cylinder and to achieve uniform distribution of fuel, by dividing the intake-air flow passing through a swirling portion at the intake port into lateral and downward flows.
CONSTITUTION: Near the inlet to swirling portion 12 of intake port 11, there are formed projections S1, S2 for dividing the intake-air flow Q into main flow Q' and subsidiary flow Q1. In addition to these projections, a deflecting member 13 is formed projectedly at the portion of the inner wall opposing the inlet to swirling portion 12, so as to divide the main downward flow Q' and the flow along the wall surface from each other more definitely and at the same time to produce many turbulences or small vortices m1, which are effective in promoting mixing of fuel and air. Further, by controlling the flow rate Q2, ratio of Q'+O2 (main flow) to Q1 (subsidiary flow) can be changed to a required value, and swirl and small vortices can be produced in an optimal manner.
