Abstract
PURPOSE: To efficiently produce a high-grade polyester having excellent color in batch-wise esterification, by controlling the feed rate of a slurry consisting of terephtahlic acid and ethylene glycol so that the rate is low at the initial period and high at the latter half period.
CONSTITUTION: The batch-wise esterification comprises the steps of: continuously feeding to a reaction system charged with 30W65% of bis-β-hydroxyethyl terephthalate or lower polymers thereof, a slurry consisting of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol at such a feed rate that the initial slurry feed rate, Fa(kg/hr), defined as a feed rate at the initial 15% period of the time required for feeding all the slurry, satisfies the inequalities, in which Sv(kg) is the total quantity, per batch, of slurry charged, and Ft(hr) is the time required for feeding all the slurry, and the time required for feeding all the slurry, Ft, is in the range of 2.0W4.5: and reacting the mixture at a pressure of 0W1.0kg/cm2 gauge and a temperature of 225W260°C.
