Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve the combustion efficiency of an internal combustion engine by constructing the piston head with a central recess and volute grooves formed on the annular top land of the outer periphery of the piston head to advance the vortex flow formation by means of squish action.
CONSTITUTION: The head of the piston 1 of an internal combustion engine is formed with a central recess 4 and an annular top land 5 at the outer periphery of the recess 4 thereof and with volute grooves 6 formed on the land 5 to face with the recess 4. A plurality of volute grooves 6 are formed circumferentially at equal interval thereamong in depth so that the depth Ti at the wall surface of the recess 4 is deeper than that To at the outer peripheral surface of the piston 1. According to this advantageous structure, mixture gas flown from squish area A into the piston combustion chamber B in the recess 4 partially form vortex flow clockwise as designated by an arrow Y along the grooves 6 at the compression stroke of the piston 1 to thereby forcibly form vortex flow in the chamber B by the action of the vortex flow Y
