Abstract

PURPOSE: To raise the strength of weld toe by lesser numbers of welding work by the procedure in which beveling process is applied to thick steel plate and at the same time slit is provided from the end of thick steel plate to its longitudinal direction, and then the thick steel plate is welded.
CONSTITUTION: A K-shaped beveling is applied to the main plate 1 and at the same time the slit 5 is provided in the longitudinal direction of the main plate 1 and centrally in its diametral direction in such a way that the depth of the slit 5 is more than 4 times the length of fillet foot. The number of the slit may be plural. Then, the main plate 1 and the subplate 2 are completely welded with fillet of a foot length composed of the welding metal 4 so that the thickness of the main plate 1 at the weld toe 3 becomes reduced to approx. 1/2. And, because the slit 5 has a sufficient depth, the flow of stress near the weld toe 3 is much the same as in the case where the slit 5 is not present even if a load is applied to the main plate 1.
