Abstract

PURPOSE:To make it possible to observe the displays such as traffic signals or ways from the both sides of a display panel by providing a light source in the vicinity of the end face of a liquid crystal panel of optically scattering type and louvers at the both sides. CONSTITUTION:A liquid crystal 1 of optically scattering type having an electro- chemical effect is mounted on a liquid crystal panel 4 which is sandwitched between glass substrates 2 and 3 having a transparent electrode of display pattern in its inner side. If voltage signals having a voltage of several +V and a frequency of 0 to 200 Hz are impressed, the liquid crystal 1 at the portion where the voltage is applied becomes optically scattered. On the contrary, the portion of the crystal 1 where no voltage is applied is left transparent. Under this condition, if the panel 4 is irradiated at its end face by a light source 5, the incident light 11 enters the crystal 1 while repeating the total reflections so that the portions 12 and 13 of the scattered light under the condition 10 pass through the louvers 6 and 7, which have transparent axis directed downward at an angle of about 60 degrees with respect to the display surface, so that they can reach the eyes of observers 8 and 9.
