Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain an automaic coupler of optical fibers which is capable of performing coupling of optical fibers with good accuracy and ease by performing coupling of the optical fibers through the use of two sets of lens systems and two sets of light intensity detectors. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber 1 is beforehand position-adjusted so that the electric outputs obtainable from light intensity detectors 7 and 8 become zero. Next, if an optical fiber 2 is placed in the state of not aligning to the central axis of the optical fiber 1, the detection outputs being not zero are obtained from each of the light intensity detectors 7 and 8. These electric signals are amplified with amplifiers 9 and 10 and are respectively fed back to motors 11 and 12. Thereupon, the motors 11 and 12 parallelly move the optical fiber 2 in the two perpendicular directions so as to reduce the electric outputs from the light intensity detectors 7 and 8. This movement is stopped where the electric outputs from the light intensity detectors 7 and 8 becomes zero. In this way, the coupling between the optical fibers is automatically and accurately accomplished.
