Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent disconnection at the time of heat sealing and to enable good electrical connection of an external member by extending the end of one flexible substrate to the side outer than the other, forming an electrode for connection on this extended part and extending a polarizing plate on the flexible substrate side formed with the electrode for connection to a region where the electrode for connection is formed. CONSTITUTION:The respective ends of the polarizing plate 5 and reflection plate 6 on the lower flexible substrate 2 side extend to the region where the electrode 7 for connection is formed like the substrate 2 to support the lower flexible substrate 2. As a result, the lower flexible substrate is supported by a supporting member 12, such as jig or housing of an electronic apparatus. A connecting member 11 which is an external member is positioned and pressed to the connecting electrode 7 of the lower flexible substrate 2 and is heated under a prescribed pressure P acted thereon, by which this member is heat sealed. The lower flexible substrate 2 is supported to the supporting member 12 via the polarizing plate 5 and the reflection plate 6 and, therefore, the substrate does not curve and the disconnection occurring in curving is prevented.

2. Description of the Related Art In the electronic equipment as described above, a film liquid crystal device has been widely used in recent years in order to make the device thinner and lighter, instead of the liquid crystal device using a glass substrate. FIG. 5 shows a conventional structure of this film liquid crystal device, in which an upper flexible substrate 51 and a lower flexible substrate 52 are opposed to each other, and a liquid crystal element is enclosed between these substrates 51 and 52. Electrodes are formed on the opposing surfaces of the two flexible substrates 51 and 52, and when electricity is applied to the electrodes, the liquid crystal element displays information by characters or the like. In addition, polarizing plates 53 and 54 are provided on the outer surfaces of the two flexible substrates 51 and 52.
On the other hand, a reflection plate 55 is arranged on the outer surface of the polarizing plate 54 on the lower flexible substrate 52 side.

However, in the conventional film liquid crystal device, excessive stress acts on the extended portion of the flexible substrate for connection by heat sealing, and the extended portion of the substrate bends as shown in the portion A. There is a disadvantage that the pattern circuit connecting the connecting electrode 56 and the electrode inside the flexible substrate is broken due to this bending.

In such a film liquid crystal device, the end portion of the lower flexible substrate 2 extends outside the display area, and the connecting electrode 7 is formed in a pattern on this extended portion. That is, the end portion of the lower flexible substrate 2 extends outward from the upper flexible substrate 1, and the connecting electrode 7 is formed in this extended portion. The connection electrode 7 is connected to an electrode arranged opposite to both upper flexible substrates 1 and 2 by a pattern circuit (not shown) to supply an electric signal to the electrode. Therefore, the connecting electrode 7 is electrically connected to the connecting member 11 from an external member such as a circuit board in the electronic device by heat sealing. A terminal having a pattern similar to that of the electrode 7 is formed on the surface of the connection member 11 facing the connection electrode 7.

In this embodiment, the respective ends of the polarizing plate 5 and the reflecting plate 6 on the side of the lower flexible substrate 2 extend to the area where the connecting electrodes 7 are formed in the same manner as the substrate 2 (see FIGS. 2 and 3). ), Supporting the lower flexible substrate 2,
As a result, the lower flexible substrate 2 is supported by the supporting member 12 such as a jig or a housing of electronic equipment.
With respect to such a structure, the connection member 11 of the external member is positioned and brought into contact with the connection electrode 7 of the lower flexible substrate 2, a predetermined pressure P is applied, and heating is performed to perform heat sealing. Since the lower flexible substrate 2 is supported by the support member 12 via the polarizing plate 5 and the reflection plate 6 during this heat sealing, it does not bend and it is possible to prevent disconnection due to bending. Thereby, the electrical connection with the external member can be surely made.

FIG. 4 shows another embodiment of the present invention, in which the same elements as in the above embodiment are designated by the same reference numerals. In this embodiment, the film liquid crystal device is arranged so that it is viewed from the direction indicated by arrow E. That is, in this embodiment, the visual observation is made from the side of the upper flexible substrate 1, and the polarizing plate 5 and the reflection plate 6 are arranged on the lower flexible substrate 2 facing the substrate 1. In this embodiment, the end portion of the upper flexible substrate 1 extends more outward than the lower flexible substrate 2,
The connecting electrode 7 is formed on this extended portion. Along with this, the end portion of the polarizing plate 4 on the side of the upper flexible substrate 1 also extends in the same manner as the substrate 1, thereby supporting the upper flexible substrate 1. Even if the connection terminal 11 of the external member is connected to such a structure by heat sealing, the upper flexible substrate 1 does not bend and does not break like the above-described embodiment, so that reliable electrical connection is achieved. It can be performed.
