Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a wrapper capable of controlling the burn rate of a smoking article. CONSTITUTION: This wrapper 100 is constructed from a porous paper base wrapper 20 with one or more bands 30 affixed to the base wrapper 20 and located at a selected interval along the base wrapper 20. The bands 30 comprise a non-porous reconstituted tobacco sheet. The regions of the smoking article at which the bands 30 are located burn at a different rate than the remainder of the base wrapper 20.

Description

Detailed Description of the Invention

The present invention relates to a cigarette wrapping paper for smoking articles, and more particularly to a wrapping structure having a controlled burning rate.

Manufacture smoking articles which have a reduced burning rate when not inhaled by a smoker, but exhibit the same flavor, sensation, appearance, odor and burning as a conventional cigarette when inhaled by a smoker at regular time intervals. It is beneficial to do so. It is recognized by those skilled in the art that the structure of the wrapping paper affects the behavior of the smoking article during smoldering. Therefore, a wrapping paper structure in which the burning rate of the smoking article is controlled is advantageous.

The improvement of smoking article wrappers to control burn rate has been previously described. For example, it is known that by attaching a small band of non-porous paper to regular cigarette paper, the cigarette formed therefrom has less tendency to continue burning when the fire reaches the band. Attaching a band of non-porous paper containing cellulose to a cigarette paper causes the problem of increasing the pyrolysis products of cellulose from the lit cigarette. It is known that pyrolysis products from cellulose are often essentially objectionable to smokers. These products have an unfavorable effect on the taste, for example. Therefore, it is desirable to create a cigarette wrapping structure, such as a cigarette, that controls the burning rate without exacerbating the essential effects of the smoking article on the smoker.

It is an object of the present invention to provide a wrapping structure for smoking articles such as cigarettes where the burning rate of the smoking article is controlled.

It is an object of the present invention to provide such a wrapping paper structure which does not reduce the production rate of smoking articles.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a wrapper structure that does not degrade the properties of the smoking article desired by the smoker.

Yet another object of the present invention is to provide economic use for tobacco scrap.

In accordance with the present invention, there are provided wrapping papers and smoking articles such as cigarettes whose burning rate is controlled. The wrapping paper consists of a single piece of substrate porous paper, which has a wrapping band cut from a reconstituted tobacco sheet, such as a BL sheet, attached to it. Reconstituted tobacco sheets are typically non-porous, slow burning materials. The band of reconstituted tobacco sheet is attached to the base in selected areas using standard adhesive. As a result, the burning rate of the smoking article is controlled because the reconstituted tobacco sheet band burns at a different rate than the rest of the porous substrate wrapper. The use of bands cut from reconstituted tobacco sheets allows for controlled burn rates while maintaining the desired properties of smoking articles.

FIG. 1 illustrates an embodiment of a cigarette 10 made in accordance with the present invention. The cigarette 10 comprises a substrate wrap 20, a band 30 attached to the substrate wrap 20 at selected intervals, and a tobacco post 12. The bands 30 may be attached to the substrate wrap 20 at any desired spacing to obtain the desired level of control of the burning rate of the cigarette 10. Preferably, the bands 30 are 5-10 mm wide and 15-15 mm apart.

The manufacture of paper for use as wrapping paper for smoking articles such as cigarettes is generally known by those skilled in the art. Generally, such papers are of the porous type. The band 30 is cut from the reconstituted tobacco sheet to obtain a controlled burning rate of the smoking article without adversely affecting the properties of the smoking article that the smoker feels desirable.

There are several different types of reconstituted tobacco sheets that are suitable for use in the present invention. One type of reconstituted tobacco sheet is BL
Known as a seat. BL sheets are formed by cooking tobacco scrap with other ingredients into a slurry. This slurry is stored in the tank for a predetermined period. The slurry is then poured onto a continuous steel belt that passes through a series of dryers. Next, the moisture in the slurry is released by applying heat. The BL sheet is taken out of the belt after drying.

Two other types of reconstituted tobacco sheets made in a similar manner are cast sheets as well as cast leaves. The process of cast sheets is similar to BL sheets, but tobacco slurries are generally not stored in tanks during processing. In the process of cast leaf,

The air taken in the slurry is removed. The slurry is then poured onto a continuous steel belt or other support device, where it is dried to form a reconstituted tobacco sheet. Another type of reconstituted tobacco sheet is the RL sheet. RL sheets are formed by a process similar to paper manufacturing, but in this case a slurry of tobacco is fed onto a wire mesh device. The water content in the slurry is released by passing the slurry through the wire netting device, but the slurry itself remains on the wire netting device.

L-sheets are preferred because the strips formed are less porous than other types of tobacco sheets. Therefore, the use of BL sheet results in greater control of the burning rate of cigarettes in the region of the band due to its low porosity.
