Abstract

PURPOSE:To suppress a deterioration of electromagnetic conversion characteristic of a magnetic head by improving wear resistance of a pole. CONSTITUTION:A head element 1 is formed with a material, e.g. alumina, etc., and the pole 2 consisting of a high permeability metallic film is embedded inside thereof. This pole 2 is constituted of a 'Permalloy' alloy 3, carbon protective film 4 and lubricant film 5, then the carbon protective film 4 is formed on the top end of 'Permalloy' alloy 3, and further the lubricant film 5 is applied on the carbon protective film 4. The top end of pole 2 is exposed on a gap surface of the head element 1 and also protruded from the gap surface. Since the carbon protective film 2 and further the lubricant film 5 are thus provided on the top end of pole 2, the pole 2 is not easily worn even if the magnetic head is made to slide on a magnetic disk medium for a long time by adopting a contact recording system, then the deterioration of electromagnetic conversion characteristic of the magnetic head is drastically suppressed.

2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, in fixed magnetic disk drives, which are large-capacity external storage devices for electronic computers, the magnetic head comes into contact with the magnetic disk medium when starting up and stopping, but during other normal operations, the magnetic head comes into contact with the magnetic disk medium. The function is that it is lifted from the magnetic disk medium. Incidentally, the flying height of this magnetic head needs to be lowered in order to increase the recording density of a magnetic disk device, and there has been a trend in recent years to keep the height lower than ever as the density of magnetic disk devices increases.

[Operation] In the magnetic head according to the first invention, the pole of the head element is formed of permalloy alloy, and a carbon protective film is provided on the tip of the pole, so that wear of the pole is suppressed and the electromagnetic conversion characteristics of the magnetic head are improved. Deterioration is significantly suppressed. For example, if the film thickness is 40 to 50 angstroms, the playback output will not decrease until the number of sliding passes is 70 x 105, and even if the contact recording method is adopted, the electromagnetic conversion characteristics will continue to operate for about 3 years without deterioration. do.

[Example] Next, an example of the present invention will be described. Figure 2
1 is a plan view of a magnetic head A according to the present invention, and a cross-sectional view taken along line II of a head element 1 of the magnetic head A is shown in FIG. The head element 1 is made of a material such as alumina, and has a pole 2 made of a high magnetic permeability metal film embedded therein. This pole 2 is composed of a permalloy alloy body 3, a carbon protective film 4, and a lubricant film 5. The carbon protective film 4 is formed on the tip of the permalloy alloy body 3, and the lubricant film 5 is further formed on the carbon protective film 4. coated on top. The tip of the pole 2 is exposed to the gap surface of the head element 1 and protrudes from the gap surface. By protruding the tip of the pole 2 in this manner, it is possible to further improve the electromagnetic conversion characteristics. Note that, as the lubricant for forming the lubricant film 5, fluorine-based perferrolopolyether, stearic acid-based lubricant, etc. are suitable.

The magnetic head constructed as described above has a carbon protective film 4 and a lubricant film 5 on the tip of the pole.
Therefore, even if the contact recording method is adopted and the magnetic head is slid over a magnetic disk medium for a long time, the pole 2 will not be easily worn out and the electromagnetic conversion characteristics of the magnetic head will not deteriorate. is significantly suppressed.

[0012] Results of an experimental study to determine the degree of deterioration due to sliding when the carbon protective film 4 has a thickness of 40 to 50 angstroms and the lubricant film 5 has a thickness of 5 to 10 angstroms. is shown in the graph of Figure 3. The horizontal axis of the graph represents the number of sliding passes, and the vertical axis represents the percentage of the initial voltage to which the reproduction output voltage of the magnetic head decreases as the number of sliding passes increases. Further, the curve plotted as a circle represents the case of the magnetic head according to the second invention in which a carbon protective film 4 is provided at the tip of the pole and a lubricant film 5 is further provided thereon, and the curve plotted as a diagonally shaded ellipse. shows the case of the magnetic head according to the first invention in which only the carbon protective film 4 is provided at the tip of the pole, and the curve plotted with a filled ellipse shows the case of the conventional magnetic head. As can be seen from this graph, in the magnetic head of the second invention, the number of sliding passes is 140×1.
The playback output does not decrease until 05 times, and based on this performance, even if the contact recording method is adopted, it will operate for about 5 years without deterioration of the electromagnetic conversion characteristics. In addition, in the magnetic head of the first invention, the reproduction output does not decrease until the number of sliding passes is 70 x 105, and according to this performance, even if the contact recording method is adopted, the electromagnetic conversion characteristics will change for about 3 years. Operates without deterioration. In contrast, in the conventional magnetic head, the reproduction output already begins to decrease after the number of sliding passes is 20×10 5 , and reaches 0 after 100×10 5 .
