Description
テロリズムが増加する中、大量破壊放射性兵器や、例えば高原子量元素のような、放射線形検出を遮蔽するために使われる物質に対する、効果的な検出器の必要性が高まりつつある。特に懸念される3つの兵器は、いわゆる「汚い爆弾」、ウランベースの核爆弾、及びプルトニウムベースの核爆弾である。例えば、汚い爆弾は、爆轟により周囲を汚染しながら撒き散らされる放射性物質に囲まれた、化学爆発物を含む。汚い爆弾は、最も一般的な痕跡であるような、それらの放出された放射線、ガンマ及び制動放射線によって検出可能である。ウランベースの核爆弾は、原理上は、235U又は238Uの痕跡ガンマ線によって識別可能である。兵器級235Uからの放射フラックスは低いのであって、そしてそれ故に、バックグラウンドガンマ線から、及び無害なソースから、235U又は238U痕跡ガンマ線を区別するためには、優れた効率及び良いエネルギー分解能が望ましい。プルトニウムベースの核爆弾は、中性子放出によって検出することが可能である。中性子エミッタは十分に希薄であり、中性子バックグラウンドレベルを数回超える中性子源の検出は、プルトニウムが存在する明白な証拠となりうる。
現行の工業用放射線検出器は、依然として40年以上前に開発された中性子及びガンマ検出技術に基づいたものである。進歩といえば、もっぱら電子部品実装やコンピュータベースの情報解析におけるものであった。利用可能な検出器技術は依然として、選択性、効率、可搬性、及び放射線兵器における3つの主なタイプの検出を備えるような、本土防衛における放射線兵器検出へのニーズを、費用効率が高い手法で満たしてはいない。したがって、遮蔽された兵器を含む大量破壊放射性兵器の、より効果的な検出器の必要性が存在する。
本発明の好ましい実施形態の説明が、以下に続く。
Claims (14)
- 第1の光検出器に光学的に接続された第1の導光部と、
第2の光検出器に光学的に接続された、ガンマ線シンチレータ物質を含む第2の導光部と、
前記ガンマ線シンチレータ物質によって生成された光子が前記第1の検出器によって検出されることを妨げるよう、入射する光学光子に対して不透明とされた、前記第1及び第2の導光部に挟まれた中性子シンチレータのシートと、
前記第1及び第2の光検出器に接続されて、該第1及び第2の光検出器からの信号の同時発生に基づき、検出された放射線を中性子として分類するか、又は該第2の光検出器からであるが該第1の光検出器からではない信号に基づいてガンマ線として分類する、プロセッサと
を含む、選択的放射線検出装置。 - 高速中性子が前記中性子シンチレータにより捕捉され、光を発生させるよう、前記導光部は該高速中性子を熱中性子化する、請求項1に記載の装置。
- 前記導光部は、高速中性子を熱中性子化する含水素物質を含む、請求項2に記載の装置。
- 前記導光部は、水、有機溶媒、鉱物油、及び有機ポリマーから選択された少なくとも1つの物質を含む、請求項3に記載の装置。
- 前記中性子シンチレータは、熱中性子捕捉同位体成分、及び、該捕捉同位体が熱中性子に晒されると光を放つシンチレーション成分を含む、請求項1に記載の装置。
- 前記ガンマ線シンチレータはプラスチックシンチレータ又は液体シンチレータを含む、請求項1に記載の装置。
- 前記捕捉同位体は、6Li, 10B, 113Cd, 及び 157Gdから選択される、請求項5に記載の装置。
- 前記中性子シンチレータは6LiF 及び ZnSを含む、請求項5に記載の装置。
- 前記ガンマ線シンチレータは、NaI(Tl), CsI(Tl), BGO, BaF2, LSO, 及び CdWO4から選択された物質を含む、請求項1に記載の装置。
- 中性子とガンマ線とを同時に独立に数え上げる、請求項1に記載の装置。
- 放射線検出結果を表示するための、プロセッサに接続されたディスプレイを更に含む、請求項1に記載の装置。
- 手持ち式となるよう構成される、請求項1に記載の装置。
- 複数の中性子シンチレータシートと複数の導光板が交互に配置されている、請求項1に記載の装置。
- 前記導光板に光学的に接続された複数の光検出器を更に含む、請求項13に記載の装置。
