Description
マトリクス状に配置された複数の画素を有する液晶表示装置であって、
互いに対向して配置された第1基板と第2基板との間に液晶層を保持し、各画素にカラーフィルタが配置された透過型の液晶表示パネルと、
前記第1基板の前記液晶層を保持する面とは反対の外面に設けられ、楕円偏光の偏光状態を有する光を通過する第1偏光制御素子と、
前記第2基板の前記液晶層を保持する面とは反対の外面に設けられ、前記第1偏光制御素子を通過した楕円偏光とは逆回りの楕円偏光の偏光状態を有する光を通過する第2偏光制御素子と、を備え、
前記第1偏光制御素子及び前記第2偏光制御素子のそれぞれは、1枚の偏光板と、1枚の位相差板とで構成され、前記位相差板は1/4波長板であり、
前記液晶層は、画面の水平方向に対応するX軸と画面の垂直方向に対応するY軸とで規定されるX−Y平面内において、X軸とのなす角度が225°の方位、あるいは、X軸とのなす角度が300°乃至315°の方位にホモジニアス配向した液晶分子を含み、
カラー表示に利用されるすべての波長範囲の光に対して略均一な楕円率を有する楕円偏光を利用することを特徴とする液晶表示装置が提供される。
まず、比較例について説明する。この比較例に係る液晶表示装置では、図4に示すように、液晶表示パネルLPNのアレイ基板側に設けられた第1偏光制御素子POL1は、1つの第1偏光板51と、1つの第1位相差板(一軸性の1/4波長板)52とで構成されている。また、液晶表示パネルLPNの対向基板側に設けられた第2偏光制御素子POL2は、1つの第2偏光板61と、1つの第2位相差板(一軸性の1/4波長板)62とで構成されている。なお、液晶表示パネルLPNにおいて、液晶層を構成する液晶組成物及びギャップについては、先に説明した通りである。
次に、第1実施形態について説明する。この第1実施形態に係る液晶表示装置では、比較例と同様に、図4に示すように、液晶表示パネルLPNのアレイ基板側に設けられた第1偏光制御素子POL1は、1つの第1偏光板51と、1つの第1位相差板(一軸性の1/4波長板)52とで構成されている。また、液晶表示パネルLPNの対向基板側に設けられた第2偏光制御素子POL2は、1つの第2偏光板61と、1つの第2位相差板(一軸性の1/4波長板)62とで構成されている。なお、液晶表示パネルLPNにおいて、液晶層を構成する液晶組成物及びギャップについては、比較例と同一である。
次に、第2実施形態について説明する。この第2実施形態に係る液晶表示装置では、液晶表示パネルLPN、第1偏光制御素子POL1及び第2偏光制御素子POL2は、第1実施形態と同様に構成されている。なお、この第2実施形態では、液晶分子40のダイレクタ40Dは、X−Y平面内において、基準方位に対して−45°の方位に設定されている。つまり、ダイレクタ(主視角方向)40Dは、X軸との成す角度が+315°の方位に設定されている。
次に、第3実施形態について説明する。この第3実施形態に係る液晶表示装置では、液晶表示パネルLPN、第1偏光制御素子POL1及び第2偏光制御素子POL2は、第1実施形態と同様に構成されている。なお、この第3実施形態では、液晶分子40のダイレクタ40Dは、X−Y平面内において、基準方位に対して−30°の方位に設定されている。つまり、ダイレクタ(主視角方向)40Dは、X軸との成す角度が+300°の方位に設定されている。

- マトリクス状に配置された複数の画素を有する液晶表示装置であって、
互いに対向して配置された第1基板と第2基板との間に液晶層を保持し、各画素にカラーフィルタが配置された透過型の液晶表示パネルと、
前記第1基板の前記液晶層を保持する面とは反対の外面に設けられ、楕円偏光の偏光状態を有する光を通過する第1偏光制御素子と、
前記第2基板の前記液晶層を保持する面とは反対の外面に設けられ、前記第1偏光制御素子を通過した楕円偏光とは逆回りの楕円偏光の偏光状態を有する光を通過する第2偏光制御素子と、を備え、
前記第1偏光制御素子及び前記第2偏光制御素子のそれぞれは、1枚の偏光板と、1枚の位相差板とで構成され、前記位相差板は1/4波長板であり、
