トラブルが起きると、その都度圧力を加えて引っ掛かった異物を強制的に押し戻したり吸引するなどして無理に通過させなくてはならないが、それでも解決しない場合は留置を解いて新しいカテーテルを挿入し直すといったように、患者に多大な負担を強いていた。
その点Y形コネクタは、分岐チューブと挿入チューブとがスムーズに連通しているので、長い挿入チューブの管路抵抗があってもトラブルの発生は起こりにくい。
又、三方活栓はY形コネクタに対して分岐チューブの接続方向が異なることから、Y形コネクタを使い慣れていても三方活栓に不慣れであると戸惑いやすく、操作ミスの可能性も否定できない。
更に、三方活栓は、各チューブが交わるT字状の接続部に、L字形の流路を有した1つの回転式弁体を設けることで効率よく切り換え可能であるが、Y形コネクタの接続部はY字状のため、そのような弁体では切り換えできない。
