Abstract

The invention provides cellulose acetate hollow fibers suitable for use in artificial kidneys which provide superior water and solute clearances. The cellulose acetate hollow fibers of this invention may be made from a molten mixture of 41-50% cellulose acetate, 30-57% polyethylene glycol (MW150-600) and 2-20% glycerine, the resultant fibers being cold drawn by 2-20% and then leached to remove the polyethylene glycol and glycerine. The hollow fibers of the invention have an internal diameter of 100 to 350 microns, a wall thickness of 20 to 60 microns, and ultra-filtration coefficient of 2 to 6 millilitres per hour per square meter per millimeter of mercury and a urea coefficient of 0.015 to 0.045 centimeters per minute.
