Claims (28)

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. Acid dyeabie polyester fibers or filaments of linear terephthalate polyester having basic piperidine groups attached to the polyester molecules characterized in that 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine groups are attached to the polyester molecules directly at their 1 and/or 4 positions or by linkages selected from oxyalkylene, alkylene, aromatic amide or amino-s^- triazine groups.
2. A fiber or filament in accordance with claim 1 wherein the piperidine group is a 1-lower alkyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine group.
3. A fiber or filament in accordance with claim 2 wherein the piperidine group is a l,2,2,6,6-pentameth lpiperi-dine group.
4. A fitter or filament in accordance with any of the preceding claims wherein the piperidine group provides 0.02 to 0.25 weight percent, based on the weight of the polyester, of dye site nitrogen atoms.
5. A fiber or filament in accordance with claim 4 wherein the weight percent of dye site nitrogen atoms is 0.05 to 0.15.
6. A fiber or filament in accordance with any of the preceding claims wherein the linkages are oxyalkylene groups containing an average of at least 3 oxyalkylene units per piperidine ring.
7. A fiber or filament in accordance with claim 6 Wherein the average number of oxyalkylene units per piperidine ring is 5 to 8o.
8. A fiber or filament in accordance with claim 7 wherein the average number of oxyalkylene units per piperidine ring is 10 to 40.
9. fiber or filament in accordance with claim 8 wherein the average number of oxyalkylene units is 18 to j50.
10. A fiber or filament in accordance with claims 6 through 9 wherein the oxyalkylene linkages are oxyethylene units.
11. A fiber or filament in accordance with claims 6 through 9 wherein the oxyalkylene linkages are oxypropylene units. .
12. A fiber or filament in accordance with claims 6 through 9 wherein the oxyalkylene linkages consist of oxyethylene and oxypropylene units.
13. A fiber or filament in accordance with any of claims 1 through 5 wherein the linkage group is an aromatic sulfonamide group. Ik.
14. A fiber or filament in accordance with any of claims 1 through 5 wherein the linkage is an aromatic carbon-amide group.
15. A fiber or filament in accordance with claim 11 or 12 wherein the aromatic part of the linkage group is a benzene ring. 1β.
16. A fiber or filament in accordance with any of the preceding claims wherein the linear terephthalate polyester contains at least 85 mole percent ethylene terephthalate units.
17.. A fiber or filament in accordance with claim 16 wherein the polyester contains 2 to 10 weight, percent of . adipate units. .
18. A fiber or filament in accordance with claim 17 wherein the weight percent of adipate units is 3 to 8.
19. . A fiber or filament in accordance with any of the preceding claims wherein the piperidine group is attached to the end of the polyester molecular chain.
20. A fiber or filament in accordance with any of the preceding claims wherein the piperidine group is attached by a group located within the polyester molecule.
21. An acid-dyeable fiber or filament substantially as described herein.
22. An acid-dyeable fiber or filament substantially as described with reference to any of the Examples.
23. . A process for acid-dyeing textile fibers or filaments of linear terephthalate polyester having basic piperidine groups attached to the polyester molecules characterized in that the piperidine groups are 2, 2,6, 6-tetramethyl-piperidine groups and the fibers or filaments are dyed . in an acidic environment.
24. -, A process in accordance with claim 3 wherein the pH of the acidic environment is at least 3 .0.
25. A process in accordance with claim 23 or 24 wherein the pH is less than 6.0. 2β .
26. A process in accordance with any of claims 23 through 25 wherein the pH is from 3 .5 to 5 .0.
27. A process for acid-dyeing textile fibers substantially as described herein.
