Claims (22)
1. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement having a cartridge case and a projectile, the front portion of the projectile forming a part of a body which contains a charge of flowable material, the frontal wall of said front portion being arranged to be ruptured for release of the charge on impact of the projectile with a target following firing from a cartridge, characterized by a front portion having a forwardly extending guard ring which surrounds, extends forwardly at least to the forward extent of and substantially protects an easily rupturable frontal wall against direct frontal impact damage to said frontal wall due to dropping and frontal end impacting with a hard surface.
2. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to claim 1, in which the cartridge case is open at one end, and characterized by said projectile being disposed in the case so that its front portion protrudes from the open end of the casing.
3. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to Claim 2, characterized by the frontal wall of the projectile being outwardly convex.
4. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to claim 2 or claim 3, characterized by the guard ring comprising a number of circumferentially disposed forwardly extending projections.
5. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to claim 4, characterized by the forwardly extending \ projections being in the form of discrete posts. ■j 40-2¾4 j V
6. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to Claim 5, characterized by the discrete posts being circuraferentially spaced apart like castellations .
7. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to Claim 6, characterized by the radially outer surfaces of the discrete posts being tapered in the forward direction.
8. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to Claim 7, characterized by the radially inner surfaces of the discrete posts being flared in the forward direction.
9. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to any one of Claims 1 to 8, characterized by the projectile having a frontal wall with a weakened rupture zone for ensuring rupture of the frontal wall and release of the charge of flovable material when the projectile strikes a target at a sufficiently high velocity, the guard ring providing a measure of protection against rupture of the frontal wall at lower velocity inadvertent handling shocks.
10. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to any one of Claims 1 to 9, characterized by the projectile being retained in the case by a snap-ring and groove connection between the case and the projectile near the forward open end of the case, and the front portion of the projectile having a bore-riding portion immediately forward of the open end of the case and to the rear of the guard ring, the bore-riding portio I having a diameter greater than the inner diameter of the case at its open end r so that it fits snugly in a barrel bore of diameter closely complementary to the outer diameter of the case. 40224
11. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to Claim 9, characterized by the projectile being formed of relatively rigid frangible cured resin, and the charge of flowable material being a volatile liquid agent. »"
12. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to Claim 11, characterized by the projectile being formed of glass-filled nylon.
13. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to Claim 11, characterized by the projectile being formed of acetal resin.
14. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to Claim 11, characterized by the open end of the case being formed of a tough impact grade resin.
15. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to any one of Claims 11 to 14, characterized by the projectile being retained in the case by a snap-ring and groove connection between the case and the projectile near the forward open end of the case, and the front portion of the projectile having a bore-riding portion immediately forward of the open end of the case and to the rear of the guard ring, the bore -riding portion having a diameter greater than the inner diameter of the case at its open end so that it fits snugly in a barrel bore of diameter closely complementary to the outer diameter of the case.
16. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to any one of Claims 1 to 15, characterized by the projectile having a rear por-tion which tapers from the front portion and which carries stabilizing fins.
17. The improvement, in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to Claim 16, characterized by the rupturable frontal wall comprising a rupture disc and a weakened web connecting the disc to the adjoining portion of the front portion.
18. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to Claim 17, characterized by the rupture disc being externally convex.
19. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to Claim 18, characterized by the guard ring extending forward at least as far as the most forward part of the rupture disc.
20. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to any one of Claims 1-19, characterized by the body having a rearwardly tapered rear end portion with stabilizing fins projecting from it, and a maximum diameter cylindrical bor-riding section between the rear end portion and the front portion.
21. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to Claim 20, characterized by an annular groove extending circumferentially in the outer surface of the body rearward of the bore-riding section.
22. The improvement in a cartridge and projectile arrangement according to any one of Claims 1-21, characterized by the projectile body being formed from two sections of thermoplas ic, impact rupturable, resin which are bonded together along a ring zone adjacent the bore -riding section to provide a hermetically sealed cavity within which . is the charge of flowable material. Z3. An improved cartridge and projectile arrangement substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanyin drawing. Attorney for Applicants.
